Thermostats by Treat’s Heating & Cooling
Before you assume your furnace is broken, always check your thermostat to make sure it is functioning. From heating and cooling systems that seems to have failed to those that are over-worked a thermostat can sometimes mask the true problem.
The most important thing to check is the power. A blown fuse, tripped circuit breaker or dead batteries will prevent the thermostat from turning the power on to the furnace or air conditioner.
Sometimes thermostats get dirty. Buildup of dust, dirt, spider webs and nicotine can cot the inside of a thermostat interfering with the electrical and mechanical components. It’s definitely easy to overlook the inside of your thermostat during cleaning so a dirty thermostat is not uncommon.
Check for loose wires or screws inside the thermostat. Corrosion can also be among the wires. Never remove the face of the thermostat without first cutting the power supply off at the breaker box. Then you are free to see if the wires or screws need to be reconnected.
Thermostats should never be located in direct sunlight, in front of drafty windows and doors or isolated from the main living areas where the temperature may not be able to be regulated accurately. Consider relocating the thermostat if possible.
