Furnace Sounds by Treat’s Heating & Cooling
Here are some common reasons that your furnace might be making loud noises. The first being delayed gas ignition and expansion and/or contraction in metal ductwork.
If a banging noise is coming from the furnace, it may be delayed gas ignition. When a furnace builds up rather than igniting, after some time when the furnace does finally ignite, a mini explosion happens and could harm your furnace. This happens when too much air is mixed with the gas making it hard to ignite, too little gas at the burners caused by low gas supply pressure, dirty or weak pilot lights in older furnaces or misaligned or dirty burners. You will need a professional from Treat’s Heating & Cooling to help you with this repair.
When metal is under pressure, it can expand and contract in your air ducts. You will likely hear a banging noise away from the furnace. The issue could be in the rigid metal ductwork that expands and contracts when the furnace blower starts. The ducts expand at the supply side because there is too much positive pressure pushing the ductwork out. The ducts contract at the return air side because of the negative pressure, allowing the surrounding air to push the ducts in.
Causes of expanding and contracting air ducts
- Undersized ductwork
