Capacitors by Treat’s Heating & Cooling
A capacitor is an electrical component that helps alternate a systems flow if electricity. If a capacitor starts to fail it will likely cause your system to malfunction and can be repaired by a professional at Treat’s Heating & Cooling.
There are two types of capacitors in your equipment:
- Run capacitor
- Start capacitor
Both capacitors help with the flow of electricity but have different tasks. A start capacitor helps to provide the energy that a motor needs to start up by storing energy and then releasing it to the motor upon start up. A run capacitor regulates the flow of electricity to the motor making sure the motor isn’t affected by the electrical surges.
Signs indicating you may have a bad capacitor:
Blower fan stops working: if you notice the blower motor in your fan isn’t turning on, this could be a good indicator it could be a problem with the blower motor,
Bad smell: if you start to smell burning, this could mean the wires in the capacitor have frayed or corroded and once they melt, this can cause the burning odor.
Clicking sound: failing capacitors will sometimes click when your furnace starts up.
