Air Conditioners & Heat Pumps by Treat’s Heating & Cooling
Whether you are building a new home or looking into equipment replacement for your current home, it’s important to evaluate energy efficiency and the cost of operation for your prospective system. Air conditioning is always an important concern when you live in a region that experiences high temperatures, homeowners always want to make sure they have effective cooling equipment.
While heat pumps and air conditioners are similar in design, heat pumps provide both heating and cooling. Both systems use indoor and outdoor coils to transfer refrigerant. As refrigerant is compressed, it becomes hot. It then moves into expansion coils, the expanding refrigerant becomes hot. As it moves into expansion coils, the expanding refrigerant becomes cold. An air conditioning unit restricts the direction of this process, limiting the expansion and cooling to the indoor coils. A heat pump permits the reversal of this process, enabling the indoor coil to be used for wither expansion for cooling or compression for heating.
When you are examining the cost of purchasing and installing equipment it is important to recognize that more efficient systems will be somewhat higher in cost than the lower efficiency ones. Your installation budget will help you decide on the units you can afford.
If you face a season of chilly weather every year, then a heat pump is more cost effective because it will provide both heating and cooling. If your temperatures are rarely below the 40’s in the winter a heat pump can be ideal for heating your home. If you live in a climate where the weather is consistently hot, you may want to choose an air conditioner as you won’t need the heat as much.
